The Olympia Club Ride will be in Kal Park this weekend starting at the Cosen’s Bay Parking lot from 9:30-11:30am. Kal offers a wide variety of trails from beginner to advanced and we will plan to split into different ability level groups.

Last weekend’s ride at Ellison was popular with U16’s, U14’s, U12’s and Race Tiger athletes coming out and a whole bunch of parents too! The work party at the club cabin on Saturday was productive with 15 people showing up to help get the cabin in fine form for the coming winter. Thanks to all who came out to help!

VSC has got a couple of activities planned for the weekend of Sept 15 and 16.

On Saturday from 9am, we have a work party happening at the club cabin. We will be doing some painting of the trim outside, installing some new flooring on the stairs going to the parent’s lounge, removing and re-laying the flooring in the lunch room, some general cabin clean up and repair of gates etc, and some clean up of the property surrounding the cabin. We’re hoping to get ten people or more to blitz this in one shot and get the cabin looking great for the up coming season. So break out the work gloves and come to join the fun!

On Sunday, there will be an Olympia Club Ride at Ellison from 9:30-11:30. This is part of the Fast and Fit program and is also open to all club members. It’s a great opportunity to go and ride with your best ski buds and we plan to have several different groups of different abilities so that everyone gets a good ride with an ideal amount of challenge.

Hope you can make it!

The Vernon Ski Club’s Fast and Fit program is into it’s second week and numbers are strong with 19 athletes aged 8-12 years old. It’s a great way to get into ski shape before the season and to strengthen the friendships developed through ski racing. Athletes are able to train up to 4 times a week and will do field sessions consisting mainly of games geared to developing athleticism, indoor rock climbing, trampoline training with certified trampoline coaches, mountain biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. For more information, see our Athletic Programs tab at the top of the page.

Staff changes for 2018/19 – New Program Director, new U14 Lead Coach and new U12 Lead Coach

We are excited to announce that Rodger Poole will be taking over the role of Program Director, Head Coach and U14 Lead coach as of September 1st 2018. Rodger has been coaching and instructing skiing for the past 18 years and has worked for the Vernon Ski Club for the past 10 years, coaching athletes at all levels in the club. Having been first introduced to XC skiing, and after spending much of his youth racing in that discipline, he eventually found some bigger hills to play on.

He has been heavily involved in the Vernon Ski Club dryland programs and has lead the “Fast and Fit” program since it’s creation. Rodger will taking the lead on the Snowsport Academy training program starting in September 2018.

Bringing with him a strong technical skiing background, Rodger is an Alpine Canada Development Level Certified Coach, Performance Level Trained and a Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance Level 4. Rodger welcomes the opportunity to lead with his experience, dedication and passion for skiing as the Program Director and U14 Lead Coach.

Andrew Lambert has fulfilled the role of PD and Head Coach for the past 2 years. “Ultimately my goal was to leave the club in a better place than when I started. I began to work on a succession plan early in my time as PD. Rodger has developed a full skill set to take the Vernon Ski Club to the next level and brings an energy and passion to the club and to ski racing which is hard to beat. I have not encountered many coaches who have Rodger’s work ethic and professionalism. I’ll be around to ensure the transition goes well and am excited to continue to work as Lead U16 Coach under Rodger’s direction.”

Other changes in our staffing see Ian Chernencoff step up to U16 as support coach. Ian’s contribution to the club over the years has been invaluable. He has been a long-term mentor to many VSC athletes and alumni and will continue to work with many of last years U14s as they step up to the U16 category. “Ian has been my wing man in coaching since I first started working with him in 2002” says Lambert, “We have a unique chemistry that I think will light up the U16 team this coming ski season. Of huge benefit is Ian’s expertise in the speed disciplines which many our young athletes will start competing in this year. We have a history in the club of producing strong speed skiers and Ian has had a huge influence on that.”

Emily Tremblay is excited to assume the position of U12 Lead Coach. Emily has worked as U14 support coach for the past season and is ready to step into a leadership role as she aims to complete teacher training. She comes from a strong racing background and has a strong set of ski skills. “Our goal with U12 is to stress free ski much more that U14 and U16. The kids need to ski everything and have a coach who leads by example and can show them good technique. We are stoked that Emily wants to step up.”

Race Tigers (U10) group will again be led by Emile Van Dun. Our Race Tigers group is growing in popularity every year, much of this due to the quality of the coaching and the emphasis on having a blast ripping the mountain with your friends and being introduced to the race centre and ski racing. Emile will lead a strong and diverse group of coaches from a variety of backgrounds. “Emile has had a huge influence on the growth in popularity of Race Tigers,” says Lambert. “ He is a strong communicator and has great soft skills with the kids, making the program enjoyable for all.”

Registration for our winter programs is expected to open on September 1st with an early bird registration of Sept 30th for U12, U14 and U16 and an early bird for Race Tigers of Oct 31st.

Fast and Fit program starts September 10th
We are also excited to announce that our popular Fast & Fit dryland program will start on September 10th with registration opening August 15th. Sessions are offered 4 days per week for 10 weeks in the lead up to the 2018/19 season. The program emphasizes the fundamentals of athleticism through field workouts, hikes, bike rides, trampoline training, cross-country and other fun activities. This program is really important to get the younger kids in the club together before the season and doing activities which promote athleticism.
